Visiting Catalina Island from Long Beach is a laid-back yet activity-packed excursion. Catalina Island is a beautiful and family-friendly destination just off the coast of Southern California. Here is a suggested itinerary for a 1-night trip that is both relaxing and exciting.
Morning ferry ride: Take the Catalina Express passenger ferry from downtown Long Beach to Avalon. The views of the island and the coastline are amazing, and you may even see dolphins or whales along the way.
Lunch in Avalon: There are many great restaurants to choose from in Avalon, so find one that suits your family's taste. We recommend Bluewater Avalon for seafood with a view.
Hotel check-in: Drop off your bags and change into your swimsuits. There are many hotels to choose from in Avalon, so find one that fits your budget and style. (We think our 3-star hotel at $400/nt was more like a 2-star hotel so are not going to recommend it!)
Afternoon walk and beach: Take a walk along the waterfront and enjoy the views of the harbor and the mountains. The Descanso Beach Club is a great place to stop for a swim or rent kayaks.
Minigolf: Before dinner, head to the Golf Gardens for a round of minigolf. This course is challenging but fun for all ages
Dinner in Avalon: There are many great restaurants to choose from in Avalon, so find one that suits your family's taste. We recommend Maggie's Blue Rose for Mexican food.
Morning fishing: Head to the Catalina Pier and rent a fishing pole or hire a guide. There are many fish to catch in the waters around Catalina, and it's a great way to experience the local wildlife.
Brunch/lunch: After fishing, head back to Descanso Beach Club for brunch or lunch. There are many great options to choose from, including burgers, salads, and sandwiches.
Ziplining: If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, try the zipline tour from Descanso Beach Club. This tour takes you through the hills of Catalina Island with stunning views of the ocean.
Souvenir shopping: Before heading back to Long Beach, be sure to do some souvenir shopping. There are many great shops in Avalon selling everything from t-shirts to jewelry.
Hop back on the Catalina Express and wave goodbye.
This is just a suggested itinerary, and there are many other things you can do on Catalina Island. Whether you want to relax on the beach, go hiking, or explore the island's history, you're sure to have a great time.
Book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during the summer months.
There are no cars allowed in Avalon, so you'll need to walk, bike, rent a golf cart or take a taxi.
Be sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The weather in Catalina can be warm and sunny, even in the winter.
If you are going late summer be advised that there are a lot of yellowjackets when outdoor dining!
If you have any food allergies, be sure to discuss with your server and kitchen. We encountered many helpful servers on the island.
I hope this helps you plan your trip to Catalina Island!
